In what was arguably Bellator's biggest fight card to date (Bellator 97), two titles were defended and two tournaments were won. Vitaly Minakov claimed the Heavyweight tournament by defeating Ryan Martinez via TKO at 4:02 of round 3. Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal won the Light Heavyweight tournament after defeating Jacob Noe via verbal submission at 2:51 of round 3. In the first of two title fights, Ben Askren defended his Welterweight belt by dominating Andrey Koreshkov. Askren won via TKO at 2:58 of round 4. In the main event Michael Chandler defended his Lightweight belt easily, defeating David Rickels via KO at :44 of round 1. Other notable winners on the card were Patricio Freire, Anthony Leone and Rafael Silva.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship made its way down to Brazilian yet again for UFC 163. Middleweight Thales Leites made a successful return to the octagon, winning via unanimous decision over Tom Watson. Another Middleweight bout saw Cezar Ferreira win impressively defeating Thiago Santos via guillotine at :47 of round 1. In the co-main event Light Heavyweight Phil Davis earned an upset win defeating Lyoto Machida via unanimous decision. In the main event Jose Aldo defended his Featherweight belt in an anti climatic way. Aldo earned a win over "the Korean Zombie" via TKO at 2:00 of round 4.

Former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz has signed with Bellator. He is scheduled to face Quinton "Rampage" Jackson November 2nd on a card that will mark the first ever pay per view event for Bellator FC.
